“…when something is so funny it makes them pee; we’re supposed to be there.”

We always tell our best friends “I will always be here for you.” When they call at 4 a.m. sobbing about their star-crossed lover, when their mom throws their clothes out on the lawn and in the middle of class when something is so funny it makes them pee; we’re supposed to be there.

But, what happens when they aren’t? What do we do when our world is in shambles and our “best friend” can’t even pick up a single phone call?

It makes you think, “What am I doing? Why am I putting so much effort in when I am getting nothing back?” That’s the simplest question to answer:

You love them. They are your best friend. When you sit there alone, usually crying, wishing they would pick up the phone and help you out, you start to think about all the times they were there for you: When your high school boyfriend dumped you out of the blue with no remorse, she held your hand and took you to get Ben & Jerry’s. When you got your wisdom teeth removed, she showed up at your house and offered, jokingly, to chew your food for you. When the boss didn’t give you the big promotion at your job, she made you a gold name tag anyway, because she knew how hard you worked.

She loved you yesterday, she loves you today and she better love you tomorrow, because she knows too much not to be your best friend.

Good friends are like stars…You don’t always see them, but you know they are always there.” - Anon.
